Joseph Newman Stone was born in Natchez MS in 1838. His mother was a native of Natchez MS and was the granddaughter of Samuel Brooks, who was elected as the first mayor when Natchez first incorporated in the State of Mississippi in 1803. After the Civil War he ran a dry goods and grocery store in downtown Natchez. His second son, also named J. N. Stone, served as Chief of Police in Natchez, and died in 1932 in his office. J. N. Stone II's first son, also named J. N., also served as Chief of Police in Natchez. J. N. Stone II's second son, named Charles Henry Stone, was the father of the present owner of Stone House, named Joseph Britton Stone. Joseph started bed and breakfast at Stone House in 2003.
